He’s right. Attempts to generate “equality of outcome” will not lift any up; it will only push us all down. We will have equality all right – as Pastor Brooks puts it, we’ll all be equal “…at the bottom.” We need to instead concentrate on what Pastor Brooks identifies as “equality of opportunity”.

Paths to racism, lesson # 952
Whether you agree or not, it seems pretty obvious to me that some politicians have a vested interest in developing racism. Without racism, many of their current “us or them” arguments fail. So policies that promote racism, under the guise of combating it, are expected. However, I think they’ve really outdone themselves this time:

Some have noted that the purpose of this policy is to “…help students who had been most impacted by the pandemic, especially Black, Latino and low-income students.” But is this really the right approach to this problem? And what do you think will be the unintended (or possibly intended) consequences of such “help”?
Lowering the bar will only produce a lower outcome for the students that the policy is meant to help. It will not prevent failure; it will simply mask it with the appearance of success. But what will happen when the public – and, in particular, employers – are forced to gauge the readiness of those “helped” by this policy to perform in the real world? When their performance is compared to that of others? What will happen when employers see that on paper their employees are the same, but some cannot perform at the level of their peers? When the only discernible difference between them and their more capable peers is the color of their skin? Do you think that this will reduce or exaggerate racism in our society?
But it gets worse. Another goal of this policy is to “… remove behavior, deadlines and how much work they do from the equation…” for setting grades. But behaving in an appropriate manner, meeting deadlines and completing work are real-world skills. By focusing on the coursework alone and not the social behavior aspects of success in education we are condemning these students to failure as adults. And, once again, it will disproportionally impact those whom the policy is meant to help – Black, Latino and low-income students.
I understand the concern – more students than ever are earning failing grades. But lowering the bar – particularly when it impacts primarily Black and Latino students – will have a long-term negative impact on both the students and racial equality. The solution must be instead to do whatever is necessary to bring all students up to the same bar. And it should not matter why a student needs help; it should be provided based on need and not race or income level. Only then will true equality be attained.

Texas school board tries censuring conservative members: ‘Naked political hit job’
Take a look at the second picture in the article, showing the reduction in seating for the board meetings. The school board has reduced public seating (and thus the number who can attend, effectively shutting out public attendance) from >100 seats for earlier meetings to only 18 for the meeting in question. If a board member wants to question this decision, so be it. It’s not an insurrection; so why the harsh response? Maybe the board president doesn’t want others to see the man (or, in this case, woman) behind the curtain (The teacher’s union, maybe? CRT advocates? COVID as a crisis to be leveraged? Who knows…).
Also, while the two conservative board members are using their own funds in their legal battle, the liberal board members are using public money. In other words, no matter how wrong they might be, the liberal board members have nothing to lose in raising a legal fight they can’t win. After all, it’s not their money; it’s yours!
I’m tired of politicians (yes, even school board members) forgetting that government in a free society exists by the consent of the governed.

Once most people with student debt have their debt forgiven they will have no need for this administration and its “free money” policies; they know it’s unsustainable. But the promise of debt forgiveness will keep them voting for Biden and his allies until then.
I mean, let’s be serious – the only thing that will save the Democrats at the mid-term election is the dangling carrot of more free money (only, it’s never free). Over 41 million people currently benefit from the student loan payment moratorium. That’s a lot of carrots… and votes.
Politics of the Supreme Court
I’ve said it before (here and here), but I’ll say it again: gun control and abortion are flip sides of the same coin. Each is used to punish the opposition:abortion restrictions to punish the left, and gun control to punish the right.
But these political blackjacks are typically used by … well, politicians. So why does it appear that Justice Sotomayer wielded a threat to the 2nd amendment during oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health? Why was she using a political threat to gun rights while at the same time decrying the politicization of the court?
Here is the passage of concern, where she is arguing that a refusal to back Roe and Casey would signal a politicization of the court. I would urge you to read the entire transcript, or better yet listen to the audio of the arguments:
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR: Will this institution survive the stench that this creates in the public perception that the Constitution and its reading are just political acts?
MR. STEWART: I —
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR: I –I –I don’t see how it is possible. It’s what Casey talked about when it talked about watershed decisions. Some of them, Brown versus Board of Education it mentioned, and this one have such an entrenched set of expectations in our society that this is what the Court decided, this is what we will follow, that the — that we won’t be able to survive if people believe that everything, including New York versus Sullivan — I could name any other set of rights, including the Second Amendment, by the way. There are many political people who believe the Court erred in seeing this as a personal right as — as opposed to a militia right. If people actually believe that it’s all political, how will we survive? How will the Court survive?
Justice Sotomayer is implying that the 2nd Amendment interpretation in Heller could fall victim to politics if Roe is overturned. But you know what’s sad about this exchange? We all know that if she had the votes she would overturn Heller in a heartbeat (Want proof? read her opinion in Maloney v. Cuomo). She’s a political “activist” justice, but she’s essentially claiming it’s unfair to use such tactics on topics she favors.

Oh, and their “job” is NOT to interpret the Constitution according to the will of the majority – if that were the case our Constitution would be worthless and we’d be just another banana republic (which we very nearly are now thanks to morons like you, Stephen).
And, by the way, I don’t give a damn if a majority of the people “want” something – it’s NOT the domain of the Supreme Court (or its justices) to provide it. The reason we have a Constitution is to protect us from the tyranny of the such “majority” whim. Without the Constitution protecting our INDIVIDUAL rights over the demands of the masses we would all be at the whim of whatever morons happened to make up the majority at any given point in time. Think about that for a moment, Stephen, before you start whining about not living in a democracy.
Any why aren’t you blaming Congress, Stephen? All that would be required to put an end to this political charade (and charade it is; the only purpose behind abortion and gun control laws is to punish the opposition) is for Congress to pass a law legalizing abortion. That’s it. Call your congressman and complain instead of blaming the Supreme Court, Stephen.
And if you really want to try living in a democracy where the majority (or at least the majority in power) rules, I’d recommend you try the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea. I’m sure they’d appreciate your humor – right up until your execution.
